Surrendering your pet
|
When can I bring my pet in?Hours for surrendering an animal are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday: 2 PM to 4 PM. Saturday and Sunday - 11 AM to 1 PM. Tuesdays by appointment only. If you are unable to bring your animal in during one of these times, please contact CCHS to make an appointment for another time. May I send someone else to the shelter to surrender my pet?No. Surrendering a pet involves transferring legal ownership to CCHS. The pet owner is required to sign a relinquishment form that transfers ownership to CCHS and verifies that the owner agrees to the terms and conditions of relinquishment. This form also provides us with valuable information about the animal’s history and behavior. If extraordinary circumstances render you unable to surrender your animal in person, please contact the CCHS Shelter Manager. Is there a fee?We ask for a $25* Continuing Care Fee per animal surrendered. CCHS spends approximately $20.00 per animal on the first day the animal is at the shelter. After the first day, it costs close to $10.00 per animal, per day, to provide quality care for shelter animals. While we appreciate any donation in addition to the $25 fee, the amount of any such donation will not alter the quality of care your animal will receive or our assessment of his/her suitability for adoption. *If you are experiencing financial hardship and cannot afford the Continuing Care Fee, please speak with a staff member. How long are animals kept at the Shelter?Once an animal has been surrendered to CCHS, there is no time limit pursuant to which he must be adopted or euthanized. Some animals may never be offered for adoption while others may remain available for adoption for weeks or months. Factors that determine if, and how long, an animal will be available for adoption include the animal's health, age, behavioral history, behavior at the shelter, and the amount of kennel space available in the shelter. Every surrendered animal is re-evaluated daily with respect to these factors, and the most healthy, socially adjusted animals are assigned to the available space in the adoption wards. |
