The Dog I Never Knew I Always Wanted
It didn't take him long to find his voice and he began protecting my house from that point on. Unfortunately, he began to have many behavioral problems and we started puppy class and behavioral techniques. We worked hard and we found the good dog within. About 5 months later, I found a dachshund mix at CCHS. I named him Cameron. He freaked Bryce out a bit because he was so hyperactive. After a few months of finding their role in my home, they became best friends. Since that point, both of my boys have been my joy and comfort. Bryce loved to play frisbee, fetch the ball, walk and pretty much any active task. One of the cutest behaviors was when he sat on the couch with his front legs on the floor. Sometimes, when I took his outside to the backyard, he would sit at the door first which meant he wanted me to give him a hug. These were the best hugs. He was also very smart. He listened to me all the time and picked up many cues. His huge ears (that he never grew into) perked up and his head tilted sideways. In March of 2006, I brought home a 17 year old dog name Shadow. I changed his name to Abbott since he was deaf. Unfortunately, Bryce was not happy with this addition, but adjusted. He accepted many people in his life, family and some strangers (but not all). However, he felt his most comfortable with me. I do believe his favorite spot was in the backyard when I was playing fetch with him. Unfortunately, mid-September 2000, he went blind, a week and a half later we found out he had cancer and less than two weeks later I had to make the worse decision of my life. On October 19, 2000, Bryce went to sleep with the following with him: his best friend Cameron, grandma, my niece and I. Cameron has taken over the protector-of-the-house job. As he is working hard in this role, it is not the same. I will miss the outline of the massive ears in the window when I come home, the wonderful hugs before going outside and the agility to jump in the air to catch the frisbee. Now and forever, I will love and miss the gentle soul of my German Shepherd….the dog I never knew I always wanted, Bryce. Michelle Roberts
