Dear Champaign County Humane Society,

Hello to everyone at the Champaign County Humane Society. My new owners thought I should send you a note to let everyone know how I’m doing in my new home.

My new owners, Carol and Errol have named me Cooper. Everyone at the humane society may remember me by the name of “Tucker”. I like my new name, but it will take awhile for me to get use to it. They have no idea what my original name was before I arrived at the humane society.

I really love going out for my walks everyday. There seems to be an endless quantity of scents for me to track and I do my best to track them all! There are lots of people, dogs and trucks to watch while I’m out for my daily exercise. Cooper loves trucks! I also love to ride in my new owner’s truck.

I was very malnourished when they adopted me on December 30, 2000. I only weighed 43 pounds and every rib in my ribcage was showing. Errol and Carol started feeding me eight cups a day of Iams lamb and rice, because I was so hungry, I was eating it all without stopping.

I went to the vet on January 2, 2001 for my first vet examination after my adoption and I did very well with my check-up. Everyone was very nice to me at the Animal Clinic in Monticello and they gave me lots of doggy treats.

The doctor thought I shouldn’t be eating eight cups of dog food a day, so she told Errol to cut back to six cups a day. She thinks that I should gain around 12-15 pounds according to my height of 22 inches tall. My owners don’t want me to become overweight, so they are gradually decreasing how much I eat each day. I have started gaining weight and my ribs don’t show so much, so they are now giving me just four cups of food a day. I wish I could eat more than that, but they know what’s best for me. I have gained two pounds in just two weeks.

The doctor was talking about neutering me, but I needed to gain a few pounds before she did it, so they scheduled my surgery on January 22nd. I don’t know what neutering means, but I’m sure they will take real good care of me.

My new owners gave me my very own bed to sleep in. They call it my crate. My owners are trying to housebreak me and they tell me that the crate will help me learn to do my business only outside and not anywhere I want to. This housebreaking is really hard for me to learn. They are also trying to teach me to “sit” and “heel”. I have so much to learn to become a good housedog.

I really love my new owners and they love me very much. They give me doggy treats whenever I am a good dog and they play with me every day. I was just home a week and they gave me a bath. Boy that bath was GREAT! It felt sooo gooood to have all that dirt and grime washed off of me, and my coat is so soft now.

I wish to thank everyone at the humane society for taking such good care of me while I was there. I know it was destiny that I should be with Errol and Carol, because it so happens, my new owner was searching on the Internet for a Bluetick Coonhound to adopt. He thought it would be a million-in-one chance, but he contacted the Humane Society to see if you had a Bluetick Coonhound and as the saying goes, the rest is history.

Thanks

Cooper
