Kids Care ...about animals

September 2006

Eight year old Sara Mason of Mahomet had her birthday party gifts donated to the animals at the shelter.

August 2006

Thank you so much to Lauren Neitzel, who donated the proceeds from her lemonade stand to CCHS. Paige Pintar asked for presents for the shelter instead of birthday gifts, brought them to the shelter and stayed to visit with the animals awhile.

July 2006

More beautiful birthday kids! Eight year old Hannah and four year old Alex of Gibson City had birthdays - with all the presents going for the animals. Joe Davis of Champaign asked for pet food instead of presents as well.

June 2006 - Abigail Simpson of Champaign also asked for donations for the animals at the humane society instead of receiving birthday gifts.

May 2006 - Cecila Brown of Urbana donated the money given to her for her birthday in lieu of presents - to care for the animals at the shelter.

April 2006

The Second Grade Class at Holy Cross School in Champaign wanted to help the animals, so as their Lenten project, they held a bake sale to raise money for CCHS. Thank you second graders - for your generous donation!

And to celebrate her own 8th birthfay, Emilee Reifsteck of Champaign brought presents for the animals in the form of several bags and boxes of cat and dog treats, food and toys. Thanks Emilee - for letting the animals share in your celebration!

February 2006

Thanks to Mari Hunt of Urbana and all her friends who donated presents for the dogs at the shelter in honor of Mari's 11th birthday.

Once again Mr. James Heinold's Fifth Grade Class from Lincoln Trail School in Mahomet brought in two huge bags of pet items to the shelter. This is in addition to the items they brought in December. Thanks again kids!

Emma McNussen of Champaign also had a birthday party where she collected donations for the shelter. To Jenna, Laren, Sarah, Hope, Haley, Devon and Kristine - thanks a bunch!

January 2006

Noah and Sophia Gehrmann of Urbana asked their friends to make donations to CCHS instead of buying presents for them for their 12th and 10th birthday. Thanks kids!

Thanks so much to the Fifth and Sixth Grade Religious Education class at the Unitarian University Church for their gift of cash and dog treats

December 2005

The terrific kids in  Mr. James Heinold's Fifth Grade Class at the Lincoln Trail Elementary School in Mahomet collected food and treats for the shelter pets instead of having a holiday gift exchange. They "exchanged and opened" a pet gift and then donated them all to CCHS!

July 2005

Micheal of Urbana donated the proceeds from his lemonade stand to help the cats at the shelter.

Birthday Club

Our thanks and best wishes go to Riley of Champaign (Age 8) and Bridget of Urbana (Age 9) who asked their birthday guests to bring gifts for the animals at the shelter instead of presents for themselves. The animals all say thank you guys!

May 2005 - The Dreamcatchers 4H Club, lead Marilyn Whalen of Ivesdale, rounded up cat litter and boxes, dog food, Q-tips, cotton balls, bleach, laundry detergent, paper towels, guinea pig, hamster and gerbil food, food bowls, and don't forget the Scooby Snacks. Thanks 4H!!

April 2005 - Their canine and feline friends grab all the headlines, but there are 70 smaller animals at the Champaign County Humane Society waiting for a home, too. The gerbils, hamsters, rabbits, mice and guinea pigs have found a special place in the heart of Urbana High School senior Heather Stewart, 17. She's organized the first small-animal adopt-a-thon at the humane society Saturday as part of her Girl Scout gold project. More >>

Jan 2005 - A school-wide donation drive at Next Generation School in Champaign will benefit the homeless pets in our community. Next Generation students are teaming up to gather items from the humane society wish list to donate to the shelter. The students and teachers will also hold a penny drive to raise funds for animal care. We commend the actions of these students and wish to thank them for their willingness to help the humane society’s animals.

Update: The fabulous Next Generation School kids presented the shelter with:

1 large animal crate
45.85 pounds cat food
27.5 pounds dog treats
40 pounds cat litter
27 pounds dog food
10 toys
2 brushes
1 gallon of cleaner
4 boxes Q-tips

They also gathered an incredible $299.15 in donations which they have requested go toward Kuranda beds!!!

December 2004 - Thanks to the students of the sixth grade classes of Unity East Elementary School in Philo and Unity West Elementary School in Tolono for their generous activities this holiday season.

Instead of a student holiday gift exchange, the sixth grade classes of both schools opted to purchase gifts for the homeless pets at CCHS. At both locations, this charitable decision was made solely by the students involved. The CCHS staff and resident pets want to thank everyone for including them in your holiday festivities!

Follow-up: The Unity kids brought in 500 pounds of food - 50 pounds of treats - 500 pounds of cat litter and two big boxes of toys/leashes. They also supplied us with five gallons of bleach and other lab supplies. The schools together raised almost four hundred dollars in cash as well!

December 2004 - The Enchanted Forest Service Unit of the Girl Scouts of Fisher held a Festival of Giving. One of our staff members went out and taught the kids about responsible pet ownership and they donated six bags of cat litter, nine bags of dog/cat food, four food bowls, five gallons of bleach and toys.
