February 23, 1999 is the fifth anniversary of Spay Day USA, created by the Doris Day Animal Foundation and sponsored by Littermaid.

The Champaign County Humane Society has worked with area veterinarians since 1997 to encourage pet owners to have their pets spayed or neutered during Spay/Neuter Week. In the first two years of the promotion, more than 400 pets in our community were spayed or neutered.

Stephen J. Notaro, CCHS Executive Director, says "This year we hope to have 275 companion animals spayed or neutered during this important event. It is a great opportunity to generate public awareness on the benefits of sterilizing pets."

The following veterinarians and clinics are participating in this year's event:

  • A & E Animal Hospital - 217-367-1137
  • Acre Hill Veterinary Clinic - 217-367-0313
  • All Creatures Animal Hospital - 217-328-4143
  • Animal Hospital of Monticello - 217-762-2144
  • Beaumont Small Animal Clinic - 217-367-1187
  • Caring Hands Animal Hospital - 217-356-6481
  • Country View Veterinary Clinic - 217-356-6481
  • Heritage Animal Hospital - 217-356-2200
  • Lipton Animal Hospital - 217-344-1017
  • Meadows Animal Hospital - 217-352-1446
  • Prairie Animal Hospital - 217-351-5814
  • VetSmart - 217-355-2972
  • The Village Pet Doctor in Tolono and Villa Grove - 217-832-7387 217-485-7387
According to Notaro, "Prevent A Litter Month and Champaign County Spay/Neuter Week are great examples of how area veterinarians can work together with the Champaign County Humane Society to help control pet overpopulation and reduce the number of unwanted animals brought to the Shelter. We hope that this event will raise community awareness of our serious pet overpopulation problem and encourage pet owners to spay or neuter their animals." The Doris Day Foundation estimates that more than 185,000 pets were spayed or neutered nationwide in the past two years during Spay Week.
