There's Snow Time Like Now: Welcome a pet into your hearts before the holidays!

Urbana, Ill-  The thermometer has dropped, snow is falling and hundreds of Champaign County pets still need a home.

The Champaign County Humane Society is hosting a "Home for the Holidays" adoptathon on Dec. 10 and 11 (Saturday and Sunday) from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 1911 E. Main St., Urbana..

"The holidays are about love and compassion.  What better way to experience unconditional love than to share your home with a pet in need of a forever home?" said Jason Smith, executive director of CCHS.  "The medical benefits of caring for a pet are well documented but the companionship they provide is immeasurable."

CCHS has set a goal of finding great homes for 70 of their resident pets over the adopt-athon weekend.  “This would be a record number of pets adopted in a single weekend” Smith said.  By having the adopt-athon early in December, the new companions will have time to adjust to their new homes before the craziness of the holidays, Smith said.

"We are going to pull out all the stops to find our resident pets a permanent home." Smith said. The humane society will be sending every animal adopted that weekend home with a current rabies vaccination, a bag of pet food and an identification microchip.  Every adopter will also receive a commemorative photograph to share the experience with their friends and family.

CCHS, located at 1911 E. Main St., Urbana, one mile east of the intersection of Main Street and Cunningham Avenue, is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

CCHS, incorporated in 1951 by a diverse group of local citizens who cared deeply about animals, is not a government body and is not supported by tax dollars. CCHS is an "open door" shelter and accepts all animals needing shelter, regardless of age, physical condition or adoptability. As a local, not-for-profit charity, we exist through the generosity of many individuals and businesses and are supported by a community that cares.
