Champaign County Cats Getting Homes by the Hundreds!

Urbana, Ill – Hundreds of Champaign County’s companion animals are meowing contently in their new forever homes thanks to a generous member of the community.

In October of 2004, the Champaign County Humane Society created a program to send two adult cats home for the same fee as adopting a single cat.  Since its inception on October 1st, the program known as the “Ms. Garbo” fund has seen over 200 cats find homes!  The idea for the program was born from a discussion in September, 2004 between then Interim Executive Director Harriett Weatherford and a dedicated supporter of CCHS.  The donor agreed to pay the second adoption fee for any pair of cats adopted that were each over a year old.  “This simple act on the part of a generous member of our community has brought love to hundreds of Champaign County’s felines and residents.” said Jason Smith, Executive Director of the Champaign County Humane Society.  “The program has exceeded our wildest expectations and I couldn’t be happier for the pets and their new families.  With around 300 cats in our shelter at any time, we are always desperately seeking good homes for our feline friends.  I hope that the donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, is very proud of what they have done for Champaign County’s pet population.”

CCHS, located at 1911 E. Main St., Urbana, one mile east of the intersection of Main Street and Cunningham Avenue, is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

CCHS, incorporated in 1951 by a diverse group of local citizens who cared deeply about animals, is not a government body and is not supported by tax dollars. CCHS is an "open door" shelter and accepts all animals needing shelter, regardless of age, physical condition or adoptability. As a local, not-for-profit charity, we exist through the generosity of many individuals and businesses and are supported by a community that cares.
