Contact – Jason Smith, Executive Director Champaign County Humane Society

(Urbana – IL) One new wall plus two new doors equals dozens of happy cats!  The Champaign County Humane Society officially opened the doors of two new communal living areas for felines at the humane society this week.  Taking a lead from the success of the humane society’s first communal cat living area which was opened in 2005, the humane society has now tripled the number of cats residing cage-free at the shelter.

“There have been virtually no drawbacks to the communal room that we already have in place” said Jason Smith, Executive Director of the humane society.  “Not only does the public love the setup but there is virtually no illness in our communal area since the cats have a much lower stress level”.

The Champaign County Humane Society hopes to replicate the success of the first communal room with these new additions.  “The number of cats adopted from the communal room is way up compared to the rooms that still have caged cats, and the cats are visibly more comfortable in a more ‘home like’ environment.” Smith said.  “If we are going to house this many felines that are waiting for adoption, this is definitely the way to do it!”

The Champaign County Humane Society is a 501 (C)3 not for profit organization dedicated to the promotion of animal welfare, the education of our community about the welfare of companion animals and the prevention of animal cruelty.  The CCHS receives no government funding and does not receive funds from any national organizations such as the United Way.
