Help in an Emergency

Domestic Violence
A Pet's Place - a safe haven for pets - a safe and confidential program for companion animals belonging to victims of domestic violence that are staying at A Woman's Place in Urbana (217-384-4390) or BETHS Place in Tuscola (217-253-6721). The location of the pets is not disclosed. A Pet's Place is staffed by veterinary medical students and staff volunteers affiliated with the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. 

Lost Pets
Champaign County Animal Control is located at the Animal Services Facility, 210 S. Art Bartell Rd., Urbana, IL 61802). All animals picked up as strays or impounded in the unincorporated area of the County and in municipalities that contract with the County for Animal Control Services are located at this facility. Pet Loss and Grief Support
The C.A.R.E Pet Loss Hotline is a confidential telephone service offered through the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. People who are either grieving the loss of a companion animal or are anticipating a loss are encouraged to call.

Poison Related Emergencies
If you think that your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, call the ASPCA Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435. Help is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A $65 consultation fee may be applied to your credit card.

Wildlife Emergencies
University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine Wildlife Medical Clinic accepts ill, injured, or orphaned wildlife (except for skunks and bats) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Emergency services are available 24 hours/day. Drop off injured animals at the front desk or emergency room (after hours) of the University of Illinois Small Animal Clinic at 1008 Hazelwood Drive, Urbana, IL (map) . Upon presentation, the animals are triaged and then assigned to a team of 8-10 volunteers (generally veterinary students) who are responsible for treating the patient. Phone 217-244-1195.

Training and Advice

Virtual Pet Behaviorist. Pet-behavior advice from ASPCA experts 24 hours a day, right from your computer. A "nationally recognized team of animal behaviorists offers possible solutions to a wide range of issues at no charge. Simply type your pet's behavior problem into our easy-to-use database, and you'll receive step-by-step advice -- without leaving home".

Central Illinois Animal Welfare Coalition. For low income residents of Champaign and Douglas County, CIAWC holds monthly spay/neuter clinics at the Champaign County Humane Society and the Champaign County Animal Services Facility. In addition to the surgery, monthly clinics also provide flea treatment, vaccines (including rabies), micro chipping and rabies registration $50 vouchers for spay/neuter surgery for dogs at local veterinary clinics are also available. Additionally, CIAWC publishes Directory of Services for Homeless and Disadvantaged Animals.

Companion Animal Resource Center. The CARE Center’s classes and programs, strive to give people a better understanding of their pet’s basic needs, open the lines of communication between companion animals and their people, and keep pets in their homes. The Helping Paw Fund provides financial assistance for the care of companion animals in times of crisis or financial instability, including medical care, spay/neuter surgeries, and behavioral consultations in East-Central Illinois. CARE is a cosponser with the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Pet U, a series of classes on pet care and behavior.

Champaign County Humane Society Pet Library On-Line offers pet care and training advice on a variety of topics.

Dog Parks

Champaign Park District Dog Park provides a place for your dog to run off-leash and interact with other dogs and humans, located on seven acres near the southeast corner of Windsor and Rising Roads.

Urbana Park District Dog Park is a 10-acre space featuring a shaded area and open meadow for running. 1501 E. Perkins Rd, Urbana.

Animal Rescue and Sheltering

Crosswinds Equine Rescue located near Champaign and Danville Illinois provides rescue, rehabiliation and rehoming for at risk horses as well as owner education, training and farrier services.

Society for Hooved Animals' Rescue and Emergency offers to help educate owners on the proper daily care and maintenance; vetting and hoof care as well as nutrition and emergencies. The society also rescues severely neglected horses and provides rehabilitation services and placement through adoption.

Feathered Friends Avian Rescue & Rehab offers rescue, rehabilitation, education, adoption, and consulting services for companion parrots.

CatSnap offers spay and neuter assistance and basic veterinary treatment to needy or unowned animals, typically cats, and assists feral cat caretakers with spay/neuter help and trapping. The organization also has a limited intake, adoption program.  Most animals are transferred from municipal animal control facilities.  All animals are in foster homes or housed at the Champaign PETsMART.

Hands 4 Paws works with the Douglas County Illinois Animal Shelter to support the shelter facilitate the legal and humane protection of domestic companion animals in Douglas County.

Piatt County Animal Shelter is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to establishing an animal shelter in Piatt County.
