Letter from the Editor Welcome to Spring! Or at least the Central Illinois version of what ought to be Spring. It seems like we’ll have a beautiful, warm, sunny day followed by three crummy, cold, and windy ones. But that’s life as we know it around here. Bean, my shaggy black shelter dog, doesn’t seem to mind in fact the muddier it is and the more puddles to play in the better! We have several great articles to share with you in this issue…some of them very timely (an interesting and informative piece about the increased risk of heartworm in the warmer months) and some of them from several months ago (an article written by a volunteer about a neat event we attended last October). This great time range is because, as some of you noticed no doubt, we skipped the Winter issue of the Volunteer Trumpet. The staff had been so busy preparing for the changes in the Volunteer Program that we did not have a chance to get this newsletter together. But now the new program is up and running and although there are still a few kinks to be worked out, on the whole things are going quite well! We appreciate all the hard work of our dedicated volunteers as we are making our way through this transition period. Please enjoy this issue of The Volunteer Trumpet! Greg |

CCHS Volunteers did a great job by voting for Rose and helping CCHS receive $10,000! We have another similar opportunity for you to help CCHS raise some money just by clicking a button from your home computer. Just go to www.fidofinder.com and vote for the Champaign County Humane Society on the right-hand margin. We can win $1,000 each month so make sure to vote every month! |

When I met Bud and Corvo, both dogs were living outside on chains. Not only were they being deprived of food, water, and shelter; the dogs’ owner had also ignored obvious signs that the dogs were either malnourished or ill. Continued >>> |

Heartworm season is here, and pet owners should start preparing for the inevitable onslaught of the dreaded mosquito! Heartworm--a parasite transmitted by these little blood-sucking fiends--should be taken seriously by all dog and cat owners. It can be deadly, yet it is very easy to prevent. There are a variety of options for preventing heartworm infection, including daily and monthly tablets and chewables and monthly topicals. It is so easy to prevent and yet every year we get several dogs who have not received this preventative and have to be treated for the disease....Continued>>>> |

With kitten season fast approaching, I offer a friendly reminder to all volunteers. Not only will our kitten population increase during the spring and summer months, our entire shelter population will grow. Please be extra cautious when handling our animals and take extra care to rid yourself of germs before moving to another animal.....Continued>>> |

Rural King’s Pet-O-Ween .....Shortly after the other volunteers, Janet and Tara, and I arrived for the afternoon shift, we were asked if we would be willing to serve as the panel of judges for the pet costume contest. Naturally, we said, “Yes!” but we were totally unprepared for what a tough assignment it would be....Continued >>> |
...first place winner was a teeny, tiny little toy terrier dressed as Tinker Bell. She was wearing little bitty green wings and a little green bow on the top of her head. She was accompanied by a slightly larger terrier dressed as Peter Pan.... |
