CCHS Volunteer Newletter

April 2003

To Volunteer Opportunities and an application to download

Hello Everyone! I have a lot of information to pass on to you this month, so this will be a rather long newsletter. Please read it thru to the end; and read all the attachments. If you have trouble opening the attachments, let me know and I will send all the information to you in another email. (web note: see end of this web page to download attachments as PDF)

March has now passed, and we placed 211 animals into new homes during the month of March. Even better, with the end of March, we reached 664 adoptions for the year! We are 123 adoptions ahead compared to last year! We wouldn't be able to have such a high adoption rate if we didn't have your help! We can't thank you enough for all you have done for the animals in our care!

If you have been working with the cats, you will be happy to hear that Chardin, Bahama Mama, and Gypsy found new homes last month. Gypsy and Bahama Mama were even adopted together! Those of you that worked with the dogs will be glad to know that Kusko and Cookie were adopted, and overjoyed to hear that Dumbledora went home! I'm sure they will all enjoy their new homes and families!

If you haven't checked out the shelter's webpage lately, you may want to take a look. The Volunteer newsletter is on it, so if you lose yours, you can always find it on the webpage. Also, check out the new Adoptables section. You can now search all of the adoptable animals, and people can even look for a lost dog or cat. The pictures are automatically updated every night!

Spring is now here with its wet, warmer weather. I am attaching a copy of the common illness form that is posted by the dog and cat supplies. Please take a few minutes to read over it again so you will be familiar with the symptoms you may see in some of the shelter residents. Don't forget to mark anything you notice on the Health Communication Log in the Hallway.

Now that the nice weather is here, its time to get out your walking shoes so you can join us for Bark in the Park on Saturday April 26th. This year's event will again be held at Centennial Park in Champaign. Registration and dog games will begin at 9 am, with the walk starting at 11 am. I will need volunteers to work from 9 am to noon, and I will need a few early morning people to help us set up at 7:30 am. Please sign up to help by Monday April 21st so I can have a schedule made by Wednesday the 23rd. If you are planning on walking, you can pick up a registration form next week at the shelter.

After you have rested from Bark in the Park, you may want to come out and help us during the Spring Adopt-A-Thon on Friday May 2nd, Saturday May 3rd and Sunday May 4th. If you want to help with the Spring Adopt-A-Thon, please sign up by Monday April 28th so I can the schedule made by Wednesday April 30th. I will need Volunteers during the following times:

Friday and Saturday Sunday
(May 2nd and 3rd): (May 4th):
11 am to 1 pm 10:30 am to 12:30 pm
1 pm to 3 pm 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm
3 pm to 5 pm 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm
5 pm to 7 pm
7 pm to 9 pm

Once you have all rested form Bark in the Park and the Adopt-A-Thon, you may be ready to tackle the CCHS Giant Garage Sale. I will need Volunteers beginning Sunday May 11 thru Sunday May 25th. Last year's sale brought in over $30,000 to help the animals in our care, and it wouldn't have been possible with out the help of our volunteers. I am attaching all the
information you will need if you are interested in helping with the Garage Sale. The more help we have, the better the sale will be. Please read over all the information and return the sign up sheet if you are able to help.

I have a few reminders to pass on to everyone:

-The staff work hard to keep the shelter clean and organized. Please help us out by keeping the Cat and Dog corners clean, as well as the Volunteer file Cabinet. Remember to throw out your trash, and to return all supplies to their proper location before you leave for the day.

-Please remember that the only volunteers that should be going into the lab are the lab techs. If you have a health concern please log it on the Health Communications Log or notify the front desk staff if it is an emergency.

-Remember that the dogs will have Play Area written on their kennel cards if they are allowed out in the play area. If the dog does not have Play Area on the card, it is not allowed in the play area.

Spring has just begun, which means our busy season is just beginning. With the ever-growing number of animals we receive, we depend on our volunteers to help us keep the animals in our care healthy, happy, and comfortable. You are part of our success, and we truly appreciate your continued help and support. We hope everyone is enjoying their volunteer time; and if you have any suggestions, comments, or concerns, please let me know.
