CCHS Volunteer Newletter

December 2003

To Volunteer Opportunities and an application to download

Hello Everyone! We made it thru the hectic month of November with three successful events back to back. While some of us were kept busy with the events, the rest of our shelter staff worked hard at getting animals adopted and placed into their new homes. The long-term Kitty City residents Scooby and Lancelot found their loving homes last month, as did the Adopt Dog residents Shenandoah and Griffin.

A Fetching Ball went very well again this year, and we were able raise about $85,000 to help the animals in our care. The committee did a great job getting the event ready to go and prizes secured, and the volunteers did a tremendous job with setting up the morning of Fetch; and working the evening of Fetch. This is another event that couldn't be successfully done without your help!

We only have a few events coming up this month. The first will be the Home for the Holiday's Adoptathon on the 5th, 6th, and 7th. Please sign up for a shift by 3:00 on Thursday the 4th so I can have the final schedule done by 4:00 pm. If you would like to help I still have all shifts open, and the shifts will run as follows:

Friday December 5th and
Saturday December 6th
Sunday December 7th
11 am to 1 pm
1 pm to 3 pm
3 pm to 5 pm
5 pm to 7 pm
7 pm to 9 pm
10:30 am to 12:30 pm
12:30 pm to 2:30 pm
2:30 pm to 4:30 pm

The next event we will have will be two gift wrapping session at Barnes and Noble Bookstore. They have again invited us to be one of their gift wrapping charities. We will get all of the proceeds, which will be
donations made for the wrapping. If you would like to help wrap, we will be out there on Saturday December 13th and Saturday December 20th from 11 to 5. Please sign up for a shift by the Thursday before the wrapping date (the 11th or the 18th). The shifts for each day will be as follows:

All day: 11 am - 5 pm
First shift: 11 am - 2 pm
Second shift: 2 pm - 5 pm

Speaking of gift-wrapping, please don't forget to share the Holiday Season with the shelter animals. They are always willing to go for walks or to be cuddled. If you don't have time to spend with the pets during the hectic schedules of the season, you can drop off some newspapers, food, toys (the cats really like ping-pong balls, and the dogs enjoy Kong toys), or any other supplies the animals may need. Anything you can do from making a donation to spending time with the animals will brighten the season for the homeless pets in our shelter.

I will be updating the volunteer files over the next several months, which will include updating home addresses, email addresses, etc; and removing inactive volunteers from the volunteer list. Please make sure I have a current home address, phone number and email address if you have moved in
the last year. Also, if you have not volunteered in the last year (either at the shelter or for Special Events) but would like to remain on the volunteer list, please let me know by Saturday December 20th. If you have
not volunteered in the last year and you do not contact me by the 20th, your name will be removed from the volunteer list. You can always re-apply at a later date if you need to have your name removed right now due to other commitments. We will be happy to have you come back when your schedule sallows you more time.

I have a few general notes to pass on to everyone:

-If you volunteer in the lab, nursery, or as an Adoption Counselor, please
let me know if you can keep your current volunteer time slot or if you will
need to change it for next semester. Please let me know what your schedule
will be by January 15th.

-Please remember to help keep the shelter clean. Throw out all trash
(please don't put trash in the file cabinets), put all
brushes/toys/leashes/bags away in their proper location, and always keep the
treat containers covered. Please keep in mind that we do get inspected by
the state a few times a year and things like having treats uncovered could
result in a violation mark.

-Please remember to always include the animals ID number (the number that
starts with the letter A) when you list it on one of the logs. We
occasionally have animals with the same name, and the only way to tell them
apart is by the Id Number.

As we make our way into December, we hope our shelter residents will find loving homes in time for the Holiday's. For those that don't find a home before the Holiday's, they will look forward to their visits from all of the volunteers. Thank you for everything you do for us, we couldn't do this job with out you!

**Remember, if you have not volunteered in the last year and you want to remain on the volunteer list, you must contact me by the 20th. If you do not contact me by the 20th, your name will be removed from the volunteer list.**
