Hello Everyone! We have made it half way thru the year and we are having
another very good year. We have already placed over 1,500 homeless pets into
new homes this year, which is 123 adoptions ahead of last year! Almost 60 of
those adoptions were a result of the Annual Kitten Shower held last month!
Yes, that's almost 60 adoptions in one day!
Among those 60 Kitten Shower adoptions were long term residents Spencer and
Mitzi. While of most you don't know Mitzi, she is a very special cat that
spent most of her 14 month CCHS residency in foster care. She never did well
in the shelter, and would quickly become sick and depressed shortly after
being put up for adoption. We tried to place her thru the foster home, but to
no avail. Mitzi's foster mom brought her to the Kitten Shower where she was
made the first official Kitten Shower Spotlight Cat, and she was adopted
within 2 hours. Even though the big news is the Kitten Shower adoptions, we
can't forget our canine adoptions, which include White Cloud and Liberty.
Congratulations to all of the June adoptees, we wish all of them the best of
luck!
This newsletter will be the first newsletter to contain the official
"Correct the Coordinator" contest. Here are the rules:
1. There will be one official game mistake in the newsletter every month.
It can be anything such as a spelling error, a left out word, or a double
word (i.e., at the the end).
2. I will have the official mistake verified by Ann Strohmeyer (just in
case an accidental one makes it into the newsletter). All official
mistakes will be logged in a notebook in the office, along with the
winners names.
3. There will be one winner for the emailed newsletter, and one winner
for the snail mail newsletter.
4. If you find the mistake you need to be the first person to contact me
by email or by phone with the mistake to be the winner.
5. Winners are limited to one prize every six months.
Have fun, and keep an eye out for those mistakes!
We have three events coming up in the next few months. First will be a
Mini-Adoption Event at The Select Comfort mattress store in Market Place Mall
on Saturday, July 31st. We will have cats and critters out there, and maybe a
dog or two. I will need volunteers from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm. Please let me
know if you can help by 5:00 pm on Monday, July 26th. The shifts will run as
follows:
All Day: 10:30 am to 5:00 pm (may include helping load animals at the
shelter or helping unload them after the event)
First Shift: 10:30 am to 2:00 pm (may include helping load animals at the
shelter)
Second Shift: 1:45 pm to 5:00 pm (may include helping unload animals at
the shelter)
The second event coming up is the Bergner's Kids Fest on Saturday, August 7th.
It will work the same as the Mini-Adoption Event, but there will be lots of
kids and parents that will be looking for interaction with the animals. This
will be a great event to for those of you that love the animals and love to
work with kids! I will need volunteers from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm. Please let me
know if you can help by 5:00 pm on Monday, August 2nd. The shifts will run as
follows:
All Day: 10:30 am to 4:30 pm (may include helping load animals at the
shelter or helping unload them after the event)
First Shift: 10:30 am to 1:30 pm (may include helping load animals at the
shelter)
Second Shift: 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm (may include helping unload animals at
the shelter)
The last event we have planned for August is the Annual Summer Adopt-A-Thon.
It will be held at the shelter on August 20th, 21st and 22nd. This is a very
busy Adopt-A-Thon, so we need lots of help to make it run smoothly. The
shelter will be open extended hours- Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 9 pm,
and Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm. I am looking for people to work 2-hour shifts,
beginning at 11 am (10:30 on Sunday). Volunteers will work in the dog or cat
areas helping people get the animals out so they can visit with them and
provide animal security, or work as a greeter to welcome people as they enter
the building and give them directions to adoption rooms, etc. Please let me
know if you can help by 5:00 pm on Monday, August 16th. I will need a minimum
of 10 people per shift, and the shifts will run as follows:
Friday and Saturday Sunday
(August 20th and 21st): (August 22nd):
11 am to 1 pm 10:30 am to 12:30 pm
1 pm to 3 pm 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm
3 pm to 5 pm 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm
5 pm to 7 pm 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm
7 pm to 9 pm
I have several remanders to pass on to everyone:
- Please remember that the front doors are not unlocked until 11 am, and
should not be used until 11 am. If you are coming in to volunteer before
11am, you must us the west side door by the garage.
- Please limit the animals you place on the grooming list to those that
need a bath, clipped and brushed, or need nail trimming. Our groomers do
not have time to sit and brush all of the animals that are shedding
(which is generally all of them). That is why we have provided brushes
and combs for all the volunteers to use.
- Please remember that the cats in the hallway are not up for adoption
and should not be visited with or handled unless you receive permission
from one of the staff.
- We are extremely low on dog treats, so if anyone could donate some we
would be very appreciative (especially the dogs!).
Dogwalkers, I have a few reminders for you:
- Please remember that the dogs listed on the dogwalking boards are the
only ones allowed outside. If a dog's name is not on the board, it is not
allowed outside. It may be too young, on cage rest, or may have just been
moved up to the adoption rooms. However, if a dog is not listed on the
dogwalking board, you may take them to a get acquainted room so they can
still receive some one on one attention.
- Playtime signs should be used for puppies only (dogs under the age of 6
months). An adult dog should never have a playtime sign on their cage.
Thank you for taking the time to volunteer, the staff appreciates all of your
help during these busy summer months. Please feel free to contact me if you
have any questions, concerns, or ideas to improve your volunteer experience. I
am out of the office on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so if you need immediate
assistance on those days, please contact Ann Strohmeyer at 344-9314, or by
emale at ann@cuhumane.org.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!
