Foster Coordinator – Full Time

About the Role:

The Foster-care Coordinator is responsible for developing and facilitating the humane society’s volunteer foster-care programs including long-and-short-term medical foster care; behavioral foster care; foster-to-adopt; and dog-day-out or overnight-stay programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Recruit foster volunteers: Attend recruitment sessions with the CCHS Volunteer Coordinator to speak about the foster program. Review foster applications; conduct interviews with potential foster volunteers.
  • Provide training, guidance, and support for foster volunteers.
  • Develop and implement effective protocols and orientation/training materials for all foster programs and roles.
  • Work closely with the CCHS medical team to ensure that medical foster providers are well supported.
  • Facilitate the Dogs-Day-Out program: Scheduling outings; matching dogs with handlers; tracking departures and returns; documenting outings and canine behavior; capturing photos for social media.
  • Work with CCHS Adoption Staff and Event Coordinator on off-site adoption events and other events and activities that facilitate engagement with the public and pet adoption.
  • Keep all foster volunteer handbooks, waivers, and other forms up to date.

Skills and Experience:

  • Animal handling and dog training skills
  • Experience training and/or supervising volunteers, employees, or teams
  • Customer service experience and communication skills
  • Project management and organizational skills

Required: Experience working or volunteering in an animal shelter.

Benefits:

Full-time salaried position; pay range: $36,000 - $42,000

Adoption Staff – Full Time

Adoption staff members at CCHS greet the public and assist our patrons in finding their next animal companion.  This is a full-time position.  Hours will include weekend days, some evenings, and some holidays.  Starting pay is $16.00 an hour.

Qualifications:

  • Experience handling animals is required
  • Knowledge and/or experience related to pet ownership
  • Friendly and outgoing
  • Effective communicator in person, via email, and over the phone
  • Adept at using a computer and performing accurate data entry

Responsibilities include: 

  • Answering phones and assisting callers
  • Facilitating safe and positive interactions between animals and potential adopters
  • Processing adoption applications
  • Explaining details of pet health and behavior records to adopters
  • Explaining details of adoption policies and contracts with adopters
  • Preparing the animal shelter for daily open-hours
  • Animal Care duties, such as kennel/cage cleaning, dog walking

About the Role:

The Champaign County Humane Society (CCHS) is seeking a compassionate and skilled Shelter Veterinarian (SV) to join our dedicated team. This full-time position plays a key role in maintaining the health and well-being of animals in our care and ensuring the highest standard of shelter medicine.

Reporting to the Executive Director and working closely with the Shelter Manager, the SV oversees medical care and disease prevention for a diverse population of shelter animals. Responsibilities include diagnostics, treatment planning, surgical procedures (including spay/neuter), and mentoring medical staff.

We strive to achieve the ideals set forth by the Association of Shelter Veterinarians’ Guidelines for Standards of Care, and are proud to support a progressive, open-admission shelter that serves companion animals of all types and conditions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform physical exams, diagnose conditions, and provide medical and surgical treatment for shelter animals (dogs, cats, rabbits, other small mammals, birds, and reptiles)*
  • Conduct and/or supervise all surgeries, including spay/neuter for shelter animals and public clients through our low-cost program
  • Develop, implement, and update protocols to prevent disease and ensure animal well-being
  • Work closely with the medical team, including a surgical assistant, medical lab supervisor and five additional medical staff
  • Attend leadership meetings to review animal health status, contribute to SOP and protocol updates, and provide staff training

*Expertise in treating exotics is not required; other resources are available to assist with veterinary care of these species.
